Job Summary
AKS’ public works team in the Tualatin, Oregon office is looking for a Senior Water and Wastewater Engineer to help us grow our water resources project delivery group. This opening is an opportunity to lead and support a diverse range of water and wastewater projects throughout the Northwest region, while also focusing on strategic business development efforts. Your technical knowledge of design and leadership within the team will be vital as we continue to build the company as well as maintain and grow client relationships. This opening is ideal for a registered professional who can take the lead on design and delivery of projects, working with our in-house surveyors, natural resource scientists, engineers, and construction team to support your efforts. Candidate Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in all aspects of water and wastewater engineering design.
  • Experience should include water transmission and distribution systems, storage tanks, pump stations, sanitary sewer collection systems and lift stations, and trenchless technologies.
  • Experience completing master plans and designs.
  • Proven increasing responsibility in the preparation of reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for water and wastewater design projects.
  • Track record of coordinating effectively with public agency staff and teaming partners on multidiscipline engineering project teams for project delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in internal task management, with a track record of organizing and training junior-level staff on project components.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills, and ability to work with various teams.
  • High degree of functionality in AutoCAD/Civil3D, Water/SewerCAD, and other industry software for designing/managing/modeling water/wastewater systems.
  • Familiarity with the procedures and methodologies published in major national guidelines (e.g. American Water Works Association, NPDES & US EPA design standards and guidelines).
Preferred Experience
  • Project experience with local and/or state agencies in Oregon or Washington.
  • Experience coordinating surveys, grading, drainage, utilities, environmental, geotechnical, and natural resources as part of projects.
  • Proven ability to identify and pursue business development opportunities.
  • Experience as a field engineer/inspector on public utility infrastructure projects.
  • Confidence in public speaking before audiences of laypersons, stakeholders, team partners, and owners.
Job Functions & Responsibilities: The senior water and wastewater engineer will be primarily responsible for performing an array of tasks in support of cities, counties, service districts, and other public and private clients. The successful candidate may serve as Project Manager or as a Project Engineer. They should have the desire and interpersonal skills to interface with clients, receive mentoring and support to become successful in this role, and look for opportunities to take on additional responsibilities over the course of their career with AKS.
  • Project Management: Oversee and manage the planning, design, and execution of pump station and pipeline projects. Develop and deliver project scopes, budgets, schedules, and reports, ensuring all project objectives are met.
  • Client Relations: Build and maintain strong client relationships by understanding their needs, providing expert guidance, and delivering high-quality service. Manage client communications and expectations throughout the project life cycle. Assist with business development activities.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical expertise in water and wastewater engineering. Lead the design and review processes, prepare and review technical specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and addressing technical challenges effectively.
  • Team Coordination: Coordinate project staffing and workload, working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders. Mentor junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and ensuring high standards of engineering practice. Participating in interviews as needed.
  • Quality Assurance: Review and approve project designs, documents, and deliverables. Ensure that all work meets company and industry standards and manage quality control throughout the project.
  • Project Execution: Manage project procurement, design review, stakeholder coordination, construction, start-up, and project closeout. Handle all administrative, contractual, and financial aspects of projects.
  • Reporting and Communication: Prepare and present project reports, technical memoranda, updates, and proposals to clients and senior management. Ensure clear and effective communication across all project phases.
