Civil Engineering - Tualatin, OR - Full Time

Job Summary
AKS’ public works team in Tualatin, Oregon, is looking for a Senior Transportation Engineer to help us grow our transportation project delivery group. This opening is an opportunity to lead and support exciting transportation infrastructure projects throughout the Northwest region, while also focusing on strategic business development efforts. Your technical knowledge of transportation design and leadership within the team will be vital as we continue to build the company as well as maintain and grow client relationships. This opening is ideal for a registered professional who can take the lead on design and delivery of transportation projects, working with our in-house surveyors, natural resource scientists, engineers, and construction team to support your efforts. Candidate Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design.
  • Experience should include urban and rural highways, intersection design, traffic management, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout, and base alignment plans.
  • Proven increasing responsibility in the preparation of reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for multidiscipline roadway design projects.
  • Track record of coordinating effectively with public agency staff and teaming partners on multidiscipline engineering project teams for project delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in internal task management, with a track record of organizing and training junior-level staff on project components.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills, and ability to work with various teams.
  • High degree of functionality in MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, and/or AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
  • Familiarity with the procedures and methodologies published in major national guidelines (e.g. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials [AASHTO] and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices [MUTCD]) and Department of Transportation (DOT) design standards and guidelines.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous DOT, County, or Municipal experience.
  • Experience coordinating survey, grading, drainage, utilities, environmental, geotechnical, and natural resources as part of transportation projects.
  • Familiarity with Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Hydraulics Manual and US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Slopes V standards.
  • Experience as a field engineer/inspector on public infrastructure projects.
  • Confidence in public speaking before audiences of laypersons, stakeholders, teaming partners, and owners.
Job Functions and Responsibilities
The senior transportation engineer will be primarily responsible for performing an array of tasks for roadway and multimodal projects in support of State DOTs, Counties, Cities, and other municipalities. The successful candidate may serve as a Project Manager or Project Engineer. They should have the desire and interpersonal skills to interface with clients, receive mentoring and support to become successful in this role, and look for opportunities to take on additional responsibilities over the course of their career with AKS.
  • Prepare and oversee roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards, including horizontal and vertical alignment, roadway sections, intersection layout, sight distance determination, roadway drainage, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp design.
  • Prepare roadway plans and profiles, drainage plans and profiles, utility plans, paving plans, pavement striping plans, signing plans, and traffic control plans.
  • Perform stormwater engineering, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, grading, and design services for transportation/roadway improvement projects or work with our in-house water resources engineers to complete the stormwater calculations/design in support of your transportation project.
  • Conduct quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) review of project deliverables.
  • Develop scope, budget, and schedule for projects, as well as providing internal project management and coordination.
  • Coordinate with public agency staff, private consultants, stakeholder outreach teams, and other disciplines for project delivery.
  • Write reports and technical memorandums.
  • Assist with business development activities.
  • Provide on-the-job training through coaching and mentoring to junior-level staff.
