Hydrographic Survey Technician
Job Summary
AKS Engineering & Forestry (AKS) has an immediate opening for a full-time hydrographic survey technician (all levels) to support our marine surveying services. This role requires frequent travel to remote and/or offshore project locations to support hydrographic and/or geophysical fieldwork. We conduct surveying and field investigations for underwater mapping and engineering evaluations, including detailed underwater infrastructure assessments for submarine cables and pipelines, dredging, habitat investigations, and hydroelectric dam assessments. You will work closely with project surveyors, AKS survey crews, project engineers, and project managers on a mixture of private and public works projects. Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- A degree in Geomatics, Geodesy, Engineering, Hydrography, Oceanography, Marine Geology, or related science field.
- Minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience conducting and processing hydrographic, oceanographic, and marine geophysical surveys.
- THSOA/NSPS Hydrographer Certification or PLS license are a substitute for the above requirements.
- Knowledge in the laws, regulations, and best practices pertaining to hydrographic surveying in Oregon.
- Understanding of geodesy, survey and tidal datum, and establishing and recovering survey control.
- Experience with cartography, CAD/GIS, photogrammetry, and chart production is desired
- Experience with Trimble Access and Trimble Business Center.
- Competency with HYPACK data collection and processing software, Surfer, or ArcGIS; AutoCAD Civil 3D or AutoCAD Map 3D is a plus.
- Ability to operate bathymetric equipment preferred to include multibeam echo sounders, single-beam echo sounders, marine magnetometers, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profilers, GPS survey instruments, and utility locating equipment interfaced to graphic computer systems for navigation and data collection in the marine environment. Experience with some but not all this equipment is acceptable.
- Experience working in a consulting, multiclient, fast-paced environment, with changes in daily activities is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and communication skills and a strong desire to learn and do new things.
- Ability to work efficiently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
Working under the direction of the project surveyor:
- Perform hydrographic and geophysical surveys from planning to delivering data products.
- Collect and process multibeam and/or single beam echosounder data.
- Process field measurements into X, Y, Z positions with point descriptions when necessary, utilizing HYPACK, Trimble Business Center, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Process 3D laser scan/lidar surveys.
- Troubleshoot GPS equipment and software as needed.
- Adhere to company workflows, standards, and procedures.
- Do what needs to be done.
