Project Accounting Supervisor

The Project Accounting Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the project accounting team. This role leads a team of project accountants and works closely with the CFO and accounting team to ultimately serve the project teams and managers. The Supervisor will monitor revenue recognition, WIP/unbilled effort, receivables, and backlog. The ideal candidate has a strong background in project accounting, understands contract terms, and possesses excellent analytical and leadership skills.
What You’ll Do
Supervise and mentor a team of project accountants, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of all procedures and overall project accounting. Facilitate a strong team environment through collaboration, training, feedback, and accountabilities.
Understand project accounting processes, and document and improve project accounting processes to optimize efficiencies.
Provide exceptional service to project teams and our clients through seamless processes, accessibility of data, accuracy and presentation of client-facing data (invoices, statements, etc), and response times.
Maintain accurate project financial records, including invoice preparation, WIP, backlog, revenue recognition, and related control procedures.
Monitor and analyze project financial performance, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
Oversee processing of project-related invoices, expenses, and client billings on time. Perform billing procedures for 2-4% of total invoices.
Facilitate compliance with contract terms, including billing schedules, cost tracking, and receivable collections.
Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes related to project accounting.
Collaborate with the accounting/finance team to improve financial reporting processes and project accounting procedures.
Support audits by providing project financial data and documentation.
Ensure adherence to company policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
Who You Are
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in project accounting, preferably in an engineering, construction, or consulting firm.
Strong leadership and supervisory experience in a financial role.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Deltek, BST, Oracle, or SAP) and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Attention to detail and a proactive approach to financial management.
Experience working with contracts, change orders, and cost control procedures.
Nice to Have
Experience with engineering or AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry-specific financial practices.
Background knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition principles, and project financial management.
Knowledge of project management principles and software.
